Andrei Bossov’s original 2-act story ballet The Red Shoes made its world premiere at Hauck Auditorium on the University of Maine campus, Orono, on 2 June 2006. Bossov Ballet Theatre performed the work again at the Ogunquit Playhouse on 17 September 2006. The Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale about an enchanted pair of shoes that will not let its wearer stop dancing had a major impact on the world of ballet in 1948, this through the British film, Red Shoes, starring ballerina Moira Schearer whom a contemporary film critic proclaimed “the most beautiful redhead in history.” Andrei’s ballet is suspected by Bossov Ballet Theatre’s management of being autobiographical – “Andrei’s own ‘coming to America‘ “. Set in an American fairground, a group of dancers become subject to the tutelage of a classic Russian ballet master who takes them to new and heretofore unimagined heights in the art of ballet.
